BaZi and the Chinese zodiac: what is the difference?

BaZi and the Chinese zodiac are different systems that share the same calendar roots. The Chinese zodiac gives each birth year an animal sign and is mostly used for a quick personality snapshot or a yearly forecast. BaZi builds a full birth chart from the year, month, day and hour of birth. It offers a more detailed picture than a single animal sign can give.

How the Chinese zodiac works

The Chinese zodiac cycles through twelve animals over a twelve year period. Each year is linked to one animal and is often paired with one of five elements. People commonly know their zodiac sign because it depends only on the birth year. This makes it easy to remember and share.

The zodiac sign is a small part of a much larger calendar system. It does not use the month, day or hour of birth, so it leaves out details that a fuller chart would include.

How BaZi works

BaZi means "eight characters." It draws on the year, month, day and hour of birth, with each unit made of a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. These eight characters form four pillars, which is why BaZi is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny.

Neither system should be read as proof of a fixed outcome. A zodiac animal or a BaZi chart describes patterns and tendencies. It does not fix what will happen in a person's life. Chart features are a starting point for reflection, not a settled result.
