Zi Wei Dou Shu or Numerology: which should you read?
They answer different questions. Zi Wei Dou Shu is strongest on reading separate areas of life on their own terms. Numerology is strongest on recurring themes, quickly and coarsely. Run on one identical birth they do not contradict each other so much as describe different things.

The real difference
Zi Wei Dou Shu works in stars in palaces, each palace a domain of life. Numerology works in single numbers derived from the date. There is no direct translation between the two, so they are better used as separate readings than merged into one.
Both read your birth, so both describe something stable. Neither will tell you whether to act this week.
Which should you use
- Zi Wei Dou Shu if your question is about reading separate areas of life on their own terms.
- Numerology if your question is about recurring themes, quickly and coarsely.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.
