Zi Wei Dou Shu or Vedic astrology: which should you read?
They answer different questions. Zi Wei Dou Shu is strongest on reading separate areas of life on their own terms. Vedic astrology is strongest on timing, through planetary periods. Run on one identical birth they do not contradict each other so much as describe different things.

The real difference
Both are house systems with a lord for each division, and both were built to answer practical questions about specific areas of life. This is the closest structural pairing among the eight, which is why disagreement between them is informative.
Both read your birth, so both describe something stable. Neither will tell you whether to act this week.
Which should you use
- Zi Wei Dou Shu if your question is about reading separate areas of life on their own terms.
- Vedic astrology if your question is about timing, through planetary periods.
- Both if you want to know whether a theme holds up when the machinery changes. That is the only thing reading two systems buys you, and it is worth more than it sounds.
